Impossible foods

The end of meat is approaching fast and scientists predict that by 2050 there will be no more food. It seems like there’s nothing we can do about it. Or is there?

Actually there is. There’s a laboratory in California who might just save our bacon.

A company called Impossible Foods are making meats without using animals, and using plants instead. And we’re not talking about your typical lentil and chickpea burgers, we’re talking about burgers that don’t only taste like beef, they also look, smell, feel and even bleed like beef.

One American food critic said, “It tastes 90% similar to a real burger and a little bit weird, in a good way. It’s definitely better than those veggie burgers.”

What makes it so realistic? Scientists at Impossible Foods create their beef using wheat protein, coconut oil, potato protein and most importantly: heme, an iron-containing molecule found in blood. Heme is what’s giving the burgers that rich, meaty taste.

The scientists at Impossible Foods say, “We’ve been eating and craving heme since the dawn of humanity. America’s top food safety experts and peer-reviewed academic journals confirmed that our heme protein is completely safe to eat. Here at Impossible Foods, we’ve discovered how to make a lot of heme without animals.”
