Today, 78 years ago, one of the world's most famous singers was born. He was a member of The Beatles. He is John Lennon!

John Winston Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on the 9th October 1940, during World War II.

He had a very traumatic childhood. His dad abandoned him and rarely came to visit, and once his dad tried to smuggle him to New Zealand! He was raised by his aunt. His mum was hit by a bus on her way home from his aunt’s house. John was only 17!

In 1959, he and his first band The Quarrymen (Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe) Went to Hamburg. Then Stu left the band because he fell in love in Germany, and the other 3 kicked Pete out. They needed a drummer. So, in 1963 they appointed Ringo Starr, and they released their first single “Please Please Me” and it immediately topped the UK charts. After 7 more years of topping the charts, the Beatles broke up. John Lennon had married his second wife, Yoko Ono, and moved to New York. There he lived for 10 years and had his second son, Sean Lennon. In 1979 he released his most famous song “Imagine”.

In December 1980 he was shot by a madman, called Mark Chapman, who heard voices in his head saying that he must harm John Lennon. He was only 40.

Today, we will remember John Lennon for all the music he made.
